Crisis as a Catalyst

When life-as-we- know-it comes to a screeching halt and wreaks havoc on our whole being ... the physical, mental, spiritual aspects of ourselves, all intertwined, seek to recover from a hit that we didn’t see (or weren’t willing to see) coming.

Life-altering experiences can shake us up, down to the core. This revolution, turns everything upside down, offering a perfect opportunity to see all that we are unknowingly carrying that can be released and ultimately serve as a catalyst for change.

It is far too easy to continue to approach things day after day, with a routine and rhythm, avoiding unnecessary change, unless we really have to.  We go about our business and rarely stop to consider that we might be sleepwalking; mindlessly going through the motions each day. Months, even years might go by with unfulfilling work, with mediocre relationships, lack of purpose, low energy, and little joy.

for: a crucial moment …

Agility = “a turning point” + “quickness”

Resourceful = “a turning point” + “wisdom”

We may not have the adequate support or inner confidence to pursue a skill that might lead us to discover our greatest passion and purpose. We might move through life, being too afraid to take a step off of the pavement and onto the grass, that opportunity to travel on an unfamiliar path that could have led to new sensations in our being.  We may have put our lives on hold as we wait for that one thing, we believe will make all things possible, i.e. soul-mate, perfect time, season, reason or person to inspire us to take that bold step or make a big move. Sometimes we may be so caught up in the details of our day that we were unable to see more than getting through our daily to-do’s.

We go about this day after day after day until something wakes us up and somehow inspires us to take a different approach and begin the process of making a much-needed change.  Often a crisis that we view as nothing more than a negative disruption in our lives that throws us and causes us to wonder if we’ll ever recover from it.

Tragedy, illness, trauma or, maybe even just a major disappointment, suffered through as individuals, a family, a community, a nation, a world, can bring immediate closure to routine. This forces us to “sink or swim.” Here is where we suddenly have a new lense to look through and see our lives, ourselves and how we’ve been living.

A momentary encounter with our mortality has the potential to re-calibrate us and thrust us into greater alignment with our priorities.   The crisis inspired awakening catalyzes a far greater appreciation of the core essentials, including recognizing the magnificent significance of  those we love and potentially an intentional nurturing or those relationships.

We might suddenly have insight on how we have been spending our time, what we have been engaged in  and what we have not been acting upon. It might also allow us to look at what we are carrying with us and what we are able to let go of. Pointless habits and improper attitudes may be revealed, what we do with these insights makes all the difference, whether we avoid, distract ourselves, deny, justify, blame or respectfully observe, acknowledge and mindfully respond or seek counsel, we will set ourselves up for the coming season.

If we learn that the seasons of feeding our body or mind with toxins have finally taken a toll and our health is compromised, our need to nourish with better choices, actions, and behaviors that will encourage healing, and promote vitality. This very process occurred in my life and resulted in the unveiling of a  passion within me to help others prevent the same thing from happening to others.

At the time, the tragedy was substantial enough to have me doubt that there would be joy in my heart ever again, but with time and space, fighting, surrendering, eventually trusting in God, I can still see the horror of that moment, but accompanied with this is the new found freedom. Surviving the very reality you most hope never happens to you can empower you and eventually feel like you have a new lease on life!

Life takes on wings of intention and the winds flow in line with a heightened current and frequency. Facing your nightmare, and living through it removes fears and expands the possibilities.
